Egypt and Persia (today's Iraq and Iran) have long held fascination for adventurers and romanticists, alike.
When I was young, I loved ancient history in school. I also read the book of The One Thousand and One Nights (also known as the Arabian Nights) from cover to cover, and that was the original olden day English version !
The tombs of the pyramids, the temples of the Pharoahs and their gods, the vast deserts with camels and dusky nomads, the veils hiding beautiful hareem women, turbanned men with scimitars flashing pearly whites as they fought to save kidnapped princesses, and mighty genies emerging in a pillar of smoke from highly decorated bottles or magical lamps... We've heard all the stories and been fascinated by them.
The spirituality of these areas, whether the modern Islam or ancient Egyptian pantheon, are also fascinating and show that no matter what beset them, the people of these middle eastern countries always had faith.
This sense of the divine is imbued in every piece that represents Egypt or Persia, today, whether or not it is engraved with heiroglyphs or beautiful calligraphic script.
The theme that imbues all artefacts from these areas is that to honor the divine we must enjoy every part of life, so even the most mundane items are beautifully made with intricate carving and delightful patterns.
