Lilipily Spirit

This lovely design by Ann Weller  is called 'Cycle of Ages'.

At its center lies a labyrinth, the sacred symbol of initiation into the depths of ourselves and the deeper secrets of the universe.

Surrounding the labyrinth are three layers of stars - looking ready to move like the wheels inside a clock, their cogs turning mechanisms.
Surrounding the points of the stars are roman numerals, laid in a clock face.
On the outer rim of the clock face are the words of the seasons, linked by decorative celtic knots that symbolize the interconnections
between all life.
Outside that rim is another circle with the glyphs for the western zodiac signs and other celestial symbols.
All this is contained in a rectangle, in which each corner is decorated with celtic styled people.

In one corner is a saint or angel holding a harp and surrounded by a view of the heavens.
In another is a fisherman and the Salmon of Knowledge.  And in the other two are an interlinked pair of Celtic Lovers.
As well, each corner has a medallion - two with anthropomorphic Celestial Suns (one could be the Vedic sun god, Surya, or Celtic sun god, Belenos), one with a celestial
backed Vitruvian Man (the key to man's links to the universe), and one showing the Tree of Life with a knotwork root system.

Linking each medallion are these four sentences - Create the Future, Cycle of the Ages, Learn from the Past, and Live the Present.

This cloth has loops sewn into the corners for ease of hanging or pegging.

Approx. Size: 92 x 82 in /230 x 205 centimeters.
Weight approx. 800 gm.

Hang it on a wall, or as ceiling d├ęcor, a room divider, or over a window. Use as a table or altar cloth, couch cover, bed spread, ground cover for picnics, sand sheet or sun canopy at the beach.  Makes a great yoga or exercise mat. Or use your imagination and wear it as a toga or super-hero cape (powers not included).
(Check the measurements for window, bed or table use).

Given the name 'tapestry', these cloths are a form of textile art.   Please Note: Tapestries are printed on the front side only.
Made in ethically run village workshops in India.
Medium weight cotton, hand block printed using vegetable dyes.  May have possible printers' registration errors and unique imperfections.

Block printed textiles are created using hand carved wooden blocks covered with vegetable based printing ink or dyes.
These blocks are laboriously hand pressed by several people along a length of cloth to create a repeated pattern.
Sometimes, this block printing is done on natural un-dyed fabric which is then hand painted or colored in after the block printed design has set.
Often, the cloth is pre-dyed and the block printing is done after the dyeing is dry.  Tie-dyed cloths are always block printed after the dyeing.

Because of the size of the cloths, designs often have several carved wooden blocks to apply in order to complete the artwork.
This means that printer errors can occur as parts of the design don't align fully or if a crease prevents the dye from taking, which can mean that sections of the line design don't meet up or have missing parts.
This, however, is not considered a flaw but an aspect of the handmade nature of the item, and part of the natural art.

In cloths that have been dyed using wax tracing or a batik method prior to block printing, there can also be accidental wax drips that prevent the dye grabbing in parts of the cloth, creating unique spots that reveal the handmade nature of the art.

After dyeing and printing, cloths are hung on lines outside in the sunshine to dry.  They can blow in the wind and brush against objects or the ground before finally being packed.  If you have odd colorations on the cloth your receive, it may be due to this final village based natural drying process.

All cloths should be viewed in the light of their handmade, rustic nature, from Indian village artisans who have been creating similar pieces in the same way for hundreds of years.
Washing your cloth when it arrives is recommended, using the Care methods noted, below.  If the odd colorations remain, they are likely to be dyes that have been splashed or inadvertently mixed.

Care: Dry Cleaning Or Cold Water Machine Wash.  Line Dry, Do not Tumble Dry.
May shrink slightly after the first wash.
Keep separate from other items for first few washes as dyes may run.
Put a handful of salt into the water to help prevent this.
