Lianne was the driving force in our TV/Video electronics repair business of 12 years, Visaud Electronics, situated in Hastings, Victoria.
Without her sheer drive, determination, business acumen and positive outlook, I would not have had the gumption to start my own business.
I had been retrenched from my employ and given some contracting work with them, which was soon to cease as well. So we had to decide on what to do for the long term. We started the business with a mere $2000, in a country town that already had two long standing repair shops. We and a mate built the workbench and partitions for the shop, Li did the sign writing on the shop front window. She designed and drew flyers, that we then walked around the local area distributing.
I would go out apple picking during the day, while Li would tend the shop and take in any repair work that came in each day - I would come in after dinner and fix whatever came into the shop. Li did the paper work, record keeping and the promotional aspects. Li has real acumen in determining correct timing and placement of adverts and business decisions etc. She came up with the idea to have a sideline in the shop of hiring out Atari and Commodore64 games ( Remember them!).
This I believe was a first for such a hire facility of games, for game consoles, anywhere. That was a really popular service that only waned when video hire outlets took up the idea and game consoles faded in line with computers becoming home items - and so the business grew, and we ended up being the only repair business in town!
In wanting to help me achieve having my own business - Li sacrificed her own dream of career and her ambitions. In late 1993 we sold the business and moved to Queensland so I could persue full time study for a Bachelor of IT Degree at university. Due to Sean's accident Lianne once again had to forgo her desire to rejoin the workforce.
